INSPIRATION
The task was to create a narrative story inspired by a song. I’ve always liked Ed Sheeran, and Visiting Hours is such a heartfelt and nostalgic song. Because I’m naturally drawn to emotional storytelling and my goal is always to make audiences feel something, I decided to kill off a mum... more specifically, my mum!!!!
I interpreted the song as being about nostalgia and missing someone who was once a big part of your life. From that idea, I wanted to show a clear contrast between "before" and "after" their loss. So, I emphasised this visually through colour: blue representing the present and the sadness of grief, and yellow representing the past and happier memories.
I also wanted to explore the struggles of a father trying to manage everyday tasks and care for his daughter while dealing with loss. That emotional journey became my interpretation of the song and the heart of the project.
For inspiration, I watched a wide range of music videos on YouTube and analysed how they used visual storytelling, colour, and editing to convey emotion. Some of the videos that inspired me include:
Nina Nesbitt - When You Lose Someone
Justin Bieber - Ghost
Dean Lewis - How Do I Say Goodbye
Cali Y El Dandee - La Estrategia
Imagine Dragons - On Top Of The World
Note: At the time, I had very little knowledge of screenwriting, which is why the script is presented as a simple AV script with limited detail. Most of the creative vision existed in my head and was translated into an animated hand-drawn storyboard, which became the main tool for bringing the project to life. From there, I developed the film and built the production around that visual plan.
